Luzviminda: the Philippines Dances for Canada150 at York is a live dance concert on October 26-28, 2017 at York University. A portmanteau, “Luzviminda” represents the three groups of islands, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, that comprise the Philippine archipelago and the provenance of Filipino immigrants in Canada. The concert will bring together folk dance, contemporary dance, breaking, jazz, and hip-hop, forms that Filipino-Canadians embody to express their diasporic identities. It will be a unique collaboration among Philippine dance companies, independent artists and dance researchers in Toronto. Luzviminda will celebrate the presence of Filipinos as the fastest growing immigrant community in Canada and one of the largest visible minorities in Toronto.
